Whether they are mining through rows and rows of numbers in excel sheets or running through endless queries in SQL or other content databases, data entry associates must have an eye for detail and patience in order to thrive at work. Because not everyone can successfully perform such meticulous and tedious tasks, it’s a good idea to invest time to hiring the right candidate. Here are five qualities you should look in your next data entry associate.
Competence in Technology
Data entry is not only about pushing buttons on a keyboard all day, everyday. Associates may be assigned additional clerical duties or responsibilities, including operating scanners, photocopiers or other electronic systems. During the interview process, learn how comfortable they are using (or learning to use) new kinds of electronics or technology.
Focused on Efficiency
One of the hallmarks of a gifted data entry associate is their ability to produce quality work at a rapid pace. Each associate has his or her own method for efficiency — so be sure to inquire about theirs. Ask questions like: How do you prioritize your work? What do you do when you hit a roadblock? What is your ideal management style? Learning about the type of environment they thrive in will help you decide if your workplace is the best match.
Takes Pride in Work
While a career in data entry may not exactly scream excitement, it should not preclude you from hiring someone who is motivated and passionate about producing quality work. When meeting with applicants, ask why they are interested in working for your company or enjoy data entry in general. Pay attention to their tone and word choice — and look for red flags. Even though data entry can be repetitive work, your applicant should not refer to it as “boring” or “mindless work.”
