10 Tips for Hiring the Right Candidate
There is much more to staffing your business than simply posting job openings. You want to be sure you have the right people in place to get the job done. These ten tips will ensure that your hiring process is fast and effective:
1. Determine Your Needs
Before you start the process, figure out exactly what you want in a new hire. For example, are you willing to let new hires learn on-the-job, or do you expect them to come prepared with the necessary skills?
2. Provide Clear Job Descriptions
Save yourself time by letting applicants self-select – write clear job descriptions that list specific responsibilities, as well as the exact training and skills you expect.
3. Post Jobs Strategically
Post your jobs in relevant places. Do your research and locate the job boards, websites and industry publications your ideal workers are likely to frequent.
4. Streamline the Interviews
There simply isn’t enough time to interview every qualified candidate in person. Start with quick phone screens of applicants who have the required skills, so you can interview only the most qualified candidates.
5. Make the Most of Phone Screens
When you make that first call, confirm critical application information. Next, check logistics. Can applicants work the required hours? Do applicants have access to transportation? If so, schedule an in-person interview.
6. Prepare for Interviews
Don’t just wing it when it comes to interviews. Think through the questions you will ask and any skills you need demonstrated before the candidate is sitting in front of you.
7. Ask the Right Questions
Skills and training aren’t the only things you need to know about your applicants. Make sure they have the right personality for your company culture. Ask about their best and worst managers to get a sense of their communication style and problem-solving ability.
8. Offer Realistic Job Previews
Don’t waste time with a new hire who is going to quit after a few days. Let candidates tour your workplace and/or shadow a current employee to make sure the position matches their expectations.
9. Make an Offer On-the-Spot
The best way to fill jobs quickly is to wrap up the application process immediately following the in-person interview. If you are sure the candidate has the right skills and is a good fit for your company, offer them a job on the spot.
10. Stay in Touch
If you can’t end the interview with an offer, be sure to stay in touch with candidates while you are making a decision. Otherwise, by the time you settle on your ideal employee, he or she may have already accepted another job.
